All eyes were on the water today as competitors hit the sea making the most of the weather conditions. After the successful ‘Deep Blu’ party at Sandown last night, spectators and competitors were ready for a day of action. Whilst kitesurfers and kayakers headed to Compton Bay, one of the UK’s premier surfing spots, windsurfers, the thundercats, and jetskiers battled it out on the water at Yaverland.

The UK RRD BKSA Wave and Big Air Championships took place with top UK and international kitesurfers competing in the Wave Masters this morning at Compton Bay. Event organiser Nigel Howell took first place, with Neil Gent in second place and Denzil Williams in third. Spectators gathered along the cliff and beach at Compton to watch the kitesurfers compete for the Wave Masters title. The kitesurfers finished the day with a big air display back at Yaverland.

The White Air Kayak Surfing Open was held at Compton Bay, a new extreme sport added to the event calendar this year. The event was a huge success, despite the wind picking up later in the afternoon. Andy McCullough took first place in the open category, with Kev Richardson coming second.

Windsurfers made the most of the wind at Yaverland fighting for the Wightlink British Open Slalom Champion title. In the challenge fleet category, Rob Stack currently stands in first place, leading both his fleet and the series. Alan Jackson currently stands in first place in the top flight pro’s category, with Dan Simpson leading the top flight youth category. The action will continue tomorrow at 10am, weather dependent.

Whilst further along the beach, and at Niton, there were more windsurfers competing in the White Air Freewave UK Championships in association with IWEP (UKWA), combining the skills of freestyle and wavesailing. Ben Profitt currently stands in first place in the pro’s category. Competitors currently standing at first place in the following categories are; Richard Jones (Junior), Graham Woods (Youth), Dan McGonigle (Amateur), Tanya Saleh (Ladies). They will continue with the event tomorrow, also weather dependent.

_MG_1194.jpgWhite_Air_2006_42.jpg_F4Y1860.jpg_O0T0226.jpg

Also thrashing it out on the water at Yaverland were the Thundercats. Crowds gathered on the beach to watch the international competitors battle it out on the waves with the wind against them. There were 13 powerboats in total, running three heats in two groups. The South African team triumphed; driver Sean Fisher and navigator Bradleigh Bosman won the event today. The finals will be held tomorrow at 3.30pm.

The notorious ‘Pierats’ also featured on the water at Yaverland today, with jetski displays running throughout the day, although the waves made it difficult to perform tricks on the water, later in the afternoon the waves were in their favour and the team performed a number of barrel rolls and other tricks. The Pierats Freestyle tour for 2006 will be completed this weekend at White Air. The choppy water made it a challenge to perform loads of good tricks, but it didn’t stop the ‘Pierats’ heading out on the water several times today.

Back on the land the action continued in the extreme playground; top names entertained the crowds with displays and demos throughout the day. Have-a-Go workshops were yet again a success, as more people were keen to get involved in extreme sports, both on the land and in the water. Top name skaters, Greg Nowik, Bod Grest, Flynn Trotman, Jed Cullen and Mark Churchill descended on the island to perform their best tricks on the skate ramp. Skate clinics were held again today as beginners were taught given advice from top names in the sport.

Mountain boarders hit the ramp again today, although the wind meant the RAF Mountain Board MBS European Cup UK Freestyle has been delayed until tomorrow due to the windy conditions. Top international riders meanwhile kept everyone entertained with displays and demos, performing yet more extreme jumps. Later on in the afternoon, the RAF White Air Mountain Board Freestyle Jam got underway, with cash prizes up for grabs. The winner will be revealed tomorrow.

The Traceur Team performed parkour demos today, demonstrating their skills to keen have-a-goers and spectators alike, showing off their various acrobatic and gymnastic-type movements on scaffolding units. Yesterday’s winners of the Parkour competition were Simon Stainton, 15 and Nicola Lock, 29. 19 people took part in workshops yesterday, ranging from age eight to 32.

Friday 27th October

Day two of White Air 2006 proved a huge success with mountain boarders, skaters, and graffiti art pro’s keeping the crowds entertained. There was much focus on the ‘have-a-go’ sessions and land based sports as a poor forecast meant the wind and kite surfing was put off until tomorrow, although have a go sessions were popular with beginners.

Showing their appreciation for the massive mountain board ramps built by Makin’ Trax and sponsored by the RAF, a whole host of local riders as well as pro’s showcased their tricks in the open park session at midday, and later again in the afternoon. Spectators judged the rider’s tricks by flashing red or green cards; MBS Rider Tom Reed, World Under 16 Freestyle Champion, amazed the crowd with a massive corked five, with local riders also testing their ability in the park today. The Trampa team treated spectators to expert tuition, proving a huge success with the younger spectators, many of them already catching air over the kickers on the hill overlooking the event. Skate and BMX enthusiasts took to the newly built skate ramp with an open park throughout the day, and beginners took part in a skate clinic this afternoon, once again treated to tuition from the pro’s.

Team Traceur also held workshops to have-a-goers throughout the day, giving a brief history of parkour, followed by warm-ups and the basics of the sport. Davey Walmsley, 16 and Gideon Bridgman, 13 were yesterday’s winners of the parkour competition, sporting a pair of Merrell Chameleon Slam shoes fresh from the Merrell factory. The Traceur Team will be displaying demos tomorrow and Sunday, followed by more workshops throughout the day.

The Graffiti team carried on this morning with their massive graffiti jam, filling the white gaps of their boards with unique character designs and trademark pieces. Another graffiti team from Birmingham, who will also showcase their creativity this weekend, are replacing the current graffiti artists tomorrow. Have-a-goers got fully involved; Gemma, Phil, and Jan Thompson, from London, armed themselves with spray cans painting their own trademark ‘E4’.

Wight Offroad set out after lunch to prepare for tomorrow’s shenanigans; they will be hosting the Wight Offroad Challenge for riders of differing abilities. The challenge will start here at Sandown tomorrow, heading through Wroxall, Stenbury, Brightstone Forest, and Newport before heading back to Sandown. Registration for the 25 and 50K races will take place between 7.30 and 10.30am at the Wight Offroad stand in the Trade and Retail area. The 100K race will be registering competitors between 7.30 and 8.30am. The races hope to test both orienteering and cycling skills of the competitors. Once again, spectators had a go on the obstacle course here at Sandown, dodging cones and scraping under the limbo.

Later in the afternoon, Seargent Gareth Davies and Flight Lieutenant Helena Membry, both from the RAF, tested their ability to fly down the mountain board ramp in front of the crowds. Membry remarked: “We thought we’d give it a go, see if we could get down the ramp. We had a bit of a competition with Anton the commentator.” Davies added: “As a physical training instructor I thought it was a fantastic activity, we should introduce it into the airforce as soon as we possibly can.”

In the surf, have a go sessions still ran; crowds gathered on the beach at Yaverland to watch the 100's of enthusiasts try and catch their first wave. Later in the afternoon, due to a lack of action on the water, the Thundercats headed out from Yaverland beach with surfers and competitors from the event in tow; a fun way to end the day.

The action continued late into the night with a Party After dark display from the crazy Mountain Board Freestylers a VIP Party at after, followed by the White Air 'Deep Blu' party!; the first huge party night of the event!

Thursday 26th October

The event kicked off this morning with huge crowds as the extreme playground in Yaverland sprung to life, welcoming competitors and spectators alike. Sponsors including Isle of Wight Economic Partnership, Wightlink Ferries and the Isle of Wight Council and the RAF, as well as local sponsors Morey’s and Brandon Hire, have helped to welcome extreme sports to the Isle of Wight, in a bid to showcase the talent of top competitors across 14 different extreme sports.

The windsurfing kicked off at midday where competitors battled it out on the water at Yaverland. Pro’s, youths, and largely junior competitors were enthusiastic to get out on the water for the first round of the White Air Freewave UK Championship. In first place was Graham Woods from the youth category, Richard Jones from the junior category, and Ben Proffitt taking first place in the pro men’s. Also on the water was jet skier Gary displaying barrel rolls and tricks before being forced back to shore with water-filled engines. The all new Freestyle World Champion of 2006, Anthony Burgess is also set to showcase his talent over the weekend, along with other members of the jet ski team.

The big ramps were put to use today by the land based sports enthusiasts eager to display their talents. Top mountain board pro’s as well as new and local riders took to the ramps displaying their flair for the sport. Whilst pro’s wowed the crowds with their attempt for the highest jump, new riders have been building their confidence on the park today. Tom Kirkman made his mark pulling a 540 spin at five and a half metres.

Skaters are set for full displays tomorrow, both in the mountain board park and on the skate ramp, weather dependant. Also throughout the weekend is the open jam with top names on the park including Mark Churchill, Flynn Trottman, and John Cattle.

_MG_0828.jpg_F4Y0983.jpg

The mountain bike display team have been warming up throughout the day performing some incredible sidehops, hooks and front heel gaps over their wooden pallet park. James Quigley, Sam Coser, Andy Stevens and Phil Stanley make up the team of two wheel tricksters set to showcase their talent throughout the weekend.

Also on the land, parkour workshops have been running throughout the day with spectators having a go at the sport, getting from one point to the next increasing their confidence as they go. The Traceur Team are set to perform demos at the weekend, showcasing their talent for the unique sport.

The Graffiti Art Jam began at midday, with Terry, Teck1, Ce Bon and local host Toxic inspiring the audience to try their hand at the different techniques. Workshops ran throughout the day, with the hard graft team bringing their influence from the city to the Isle of Wight.

Thanks to Wight Water, Team Traceur, X-Isle and Trampa, the ‘Have-a-go’ marquee has seen enthusiasm from spectators with a large number trying out surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing, mountain boarding and parkour. Expect lots more action, competitors, and sports over the next three days!
